Overcome Your Stage Fright
Had enough of "same-old" solutions for your terror of public speaking? This article's for you.
E.S.P. Icebreaker
Objective: To get "ooh's" and "ah's!"
Explain to your group that you have ESP and can foretell the results of an arithmetic exercise.
Get a volunteer. Ask them to write on the flipchart ANY three-digit number (note: the number must not be a mirror image, e.g. 323.) Make sure you cannot see the number.
Then: tell the person to reverse the number and subtract the lower number from the higher one.
For example, 821 minus 128 equals 693.
Now, reverse this number and add to to the preceding product: 396 plus 693
As the volunteer completes the calculation, hold up a prepared display card with the numbers 1089.
This exercise will ALWAYS result in the number 1089!
(See "caveat" at the end of the newsletter.)
See You Again in May!
"Caveat" to E.S.P. Icebreaker:
Occasionally, the initial subtraction will yield a two-digit number. If it does, direct the volunteer to add a zero in front (e.g. 99 changes to 099.) Proceed as before--the resulting sum remains 1089!
